A Fae Story 06:30
I was told a tale About a princess from the Kingdom of Fail She went to seek the Fae A royal visit that went badly astray Seduced by wolves, or eaten by witches The Kingdom of Fail and the promise of riches The Sky will fall, the Land will be broken The wrath of the Fae is such a terrible token There came a man in red He had grey wings upon his back and his head The stranger made it known He was a hero who could help save the Throne The King said 'This will never do We hate your kind, be off with you We have no need for 'cubi scum Our hero must be a mortal one' The hero's blood ran hot "I'm going to help you if you like it or not" He waved his mighty sword And went to bring the Princess back to her Lord Seduced by wolves, or eaten by witches The Kingdom of Fail and the promise of riches The sky will fall, the land will be broken The wrath of the Fae is such a terrible token It took him just two days to find the princess But as they tried to leave The Fae Lord held them by the sleeve "The King will try to have the both of you killed If you can bide your time I'll make sure vengeance can be mine" The hero and Princess Returned in triumph and were under arrest Before they could be hung The Fae returned and killed the King and his son The Fae Lord led them out of jail And named the hero King of Fail The wedding was a special one And soon the new queen bore a son (That's me) There's one thing left to do I have to tell you that this story was true But heroes love to roam And so my Dad left and put me on the throne The son of two, of princesses and kings Benificent ruler with a new pair of headwings I'll use my brain, my eyes and my ears Reign wisely and justly for thousands of years

I'm just a simple man My wants are few There's really not much more I want from you Life Eternal The future plain to see There's only one thing more that interests me: Absolute Power No-one will resist Absolute Power With an iron fist Absolute Power To rule the world is fun Absolute Power Over everyone I've had an easy life Yes, that's a fact I don't know how to put it with more tact One tires of drinking One tires of food But there's one thing that always lifts my mood: Absolute Power No-one will resist Absolute Power With an iron fist Absolute Power To rule the world is fun Absolute Power Over everyone

As I was walking down the main street On a wednesday Watching people cook a watermelon stew The thought of food was a distraction, A reminder, That there was something I forgot to do And as I crossed the bridge back home I found a note pinned to my shack It had the paw-print of a tiger and the words 'We're coming back' They are not evil, it's just something they have to do Tigers with beautiful voices are coming for you They are not evil, it's just something they have to do Tigers with beautiful voices are coming for you Singing songs which have words you won't remember Righting wrongs, now those days are gone forever Come the day, yes, you've tried to circumvent it All the way, but you know you can't prevent it Maybe you, think that you don't serve a master What we do is to save all from disaster Soon you'll learn, though you thought we'd all been slaughtered We'll return - to restore the natural order As I was walking by the river On a friday Watching idly as the wind blew through the trees I turned my mind back to the tigers And as I stood there I'm sure I heard a voice upon the breeze And as I crossed the bridge back home Lit up by lanterns glowing bright I turned my mind back to the tigers and that final, fatal night They are not evil, it's just something they have to do Tigers with beautiful voices are coming for you They are not evil, it's just something they have to do Tigers with beautiful voices are coming for you Singing songs which have words you won't remember Righting wrongs, now those days are gone forever Did you think, that we kill things for no reason? It's the brink, of disaster's final season Soon you'll learn, though you thought we'd all been slaughtered We'll return - to restore the natural order Hear our cry, what you've done is no solution You can try - but you can't stop evolution

Recording and mixing:
TASCAM TSR-8 using only tracks 1,3,5 and 7 and no DBX.
Tape used for tracking was Quantegy 406.

Studer A807 stereo master recorder. Tape used for mixdown was RMGI SM900.

Soundcraft MFXi 24 mixing desk. The Lexicon digital processor was not used.

Recording

The bed tracks were sequenced. It would have been nice to have done things otherwise but I'm more of a composer and a pretty awful musician.
To keep things fair, the sequence was edited down so that each instrument was given a single mono track, e.g. drums on 3, Strings on 7, Organ on 5 etc.

No track-sharing or multitimbrality was allowed, though the contents of each track could change over time, e.g. strings at one point, later the lead synth and then the M400 choir, but never at the same time.

At one point the ending on 'Fae Story' had a shared track that I had missed. To avoid cheating, I recorded a new version of the ending and added it to the end by means of tape splicing.

No timecode was used so the backing tracks were recorded live across the 4 tracks available with no going back afterwards.

The 4 backing tracks were then mixed down to the stereo master recorder, and bounced back onto tracks 5 and 7 of the TASCAM. This was done on a second tape, just in case anyone wants to see the original bed tracks.

This then gave me a stereo backing track, and two spare tracks to add vocals/bass/any additional synthesizer overdubs (played by hand).

In principle I could have recorded the sequencer output to a stereo pair and saved having to do the reduction mix, but that felt like cheating.
In any case I figure the additional effort, tape costs and generation loss is a suitable penalty for using a sequencer in the first place, and besides that's how this kind of thing was done on Penny Lane etc.

A 24-track version of 'A Fae Story' has been previously released on the 'Incubi and Succubi' album in 2013. A 24-track demo of 'Tigers with beautiful voices' has also been made available, but is not likely to appear on an album proper until 2016. While I considered lifting tracks from the master tapes of those songs I resisted the temptation. Synchronizing them without any form of timecode would have been painful in any case.

The tape effects on 'Tigers' was done using the shuttle control on the A807 and some scrap tape which had been used for flanging vocals on a previous project.

Tapes used during the project

1/2" 8-track backing tracks (recorded on 1,3,5 and 7)
2. 1/4" stereo mixdown of backing tracks
3. 1/2" 8-track 2nd gen master (backing tracks on 5 and 7, 1 and 3 for overdubs)
4. 1/4" stereo final master
Digitization and post

Digitization was done at 24/96 using a TASCAM DA3000 outboard recorder.
Digital post-processing was limited to cutting the tracks into separate files.
mhWaveEdit was used for this since it works directly on the raw data, whereas Audacity works by converting to an internal floating point datatype first, which means that even simple cut-and-paste editing will not return a byte-for-byte copy of the original audio.

The EP plays quite well in a single file, the gaps between tracks having been adjusted by razorblade editing.

No EQ or level adjustment was peformed in the editor, though the gain was increased by 1.4 during conversion to 16/44 (using SoX) e.g.

sox 1.wav -r 44100 -b 16 output/1-A_Fae_Story.wav vol 1.4
