Overview
The recording device used was a Tascam Midistudio 688 eight track cassette mixer and recorder. Because this device offers eight tracks on a standard audio cassette guidelines were followed pretty closely with the exception of a few scratch and reference tracks that didn’t end up on the final recording. Preamps used were those on the 688 and the Presonus Firepod for the condenser mic (no phantom power on the 688).
Mics
Drums
AKG D112 on the kick, Audix i5 sometimes on, sometimes under the snare, Audio Technica Pro 37 cardioid condenser overhead. Mostly recorded to three separate tracks and then mixed down to a single track. Some songs have all three mics mixed live onto a single track.
Bass
AKG D112 six to twelve inches away from the cab straight on, Audix i5 six inches away at a 30-45o angle from center. Both mics mixed live onto a single track.
Guitars
Most of the electric guitars were recorded with the Audix i5 directly on the speaker. The acoustic track was the i5 as well. A few solos and feedback tracks used the Shure SM57.
Vocals
All lead vocals were recorded with the Shure SM58 Beta and all backing vocals used the Shure SM58. Usually these were recorded simultaneously and mixed live to a single track. When tracks permitted, they were recorded separately onto separate tracks.
Other Instruments
The synth track was recorded with a Shure SM57 directly on the amp speaker. The glockenspiel track used the Audix i5 six inches over head.
Mixdown and mastering
The EP was mixed to two tracks on the Tascam into Logic Pro 9 on a MacBook Pro with the Presonus Firepod audio interface. It was slightly mastered into high quality stereo audio files in Logic.
