The main machine was a Portascam 424 MK III. Dolby Noise reduction was off.
An Empirical Labs Mike-E was also used.

On the songs with a proper drummer, I used three mics to record drums to two tracks: the close mics on the snare and kick went to track one, while a room mic through the Mike-E went to track two. I laid down bass (or synth) on track 3 the same day the drums were cut. A few days later, in a brief session, I recorded the electric guitar bits on track 4. These four tracks were mixed and EQ'ed on the 424 to two tracks in my DAW, which were sent to tracks 3&4 of a fresh tape for possible overdubs. Songs without Dave followed the same bounce down protocols, though there were more bounce downs performed at tape level with those tracks. Pitch control and tape speed manipulations were employed often.

Digital disclosure: In-the-box reverb was applied to the stereo mixdown of one song ("your Elegant Precision") whenever the vocals came in.
